It started off quite closed, but the first impression was of a very good wine, still very young and still a little marked by the élevage, with some oak notes emerging after the wine had been in the glass for a while. There is almost 30% Graciano in this blend, with the rest Tempranillo. This is full-bodied with abundant, fine-grained tannins and very good balance. This will require some more time in bottle and should have a long life ahead. Even though it might show a little more exuberant in comparison, the palate reveals an austere wine that has a large personality but is superbly balanced, with very fine-grained tannins and very good balance. But sometimes comparisons can be tedious, and there are wines that suffer. This is one of them, but it is still superb. 4,800 bottles produced. This mid-weight yet generous Champagne offers gorgeous depth and richness, with a long, refined finish. The Ciel et Terre shows more than enough complexity and nuance to offer fine drinking now and over the next few years. Though labeled a NV wine, Entre Ciel Et Terre is a single-vintage wine (in this case 2003), 41% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 24% Meunier that spent 12 months in oak and was bottled with 4 grams of dosage. It's expressive and has floral notes on the nose along with wild berries, herbs and a spicy and smoky touch that's nicely integrated. It has good complexity and nuance, and the palate is medium to full-bodied and intense, with pungent flavors and great length and persistence. Truly spectacular! It has a very feminine, precise bouquet with dark cherries, raspberry, bergamot tea and just a hint of crushed rose petals, not powerful but nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, slightly crunchy in texture, thanks to the stem addition, and very well poised with a mineral-driven finish that flourishes on the aftertaste. This is another excellent contribution to the vintage from the domaine, although here I probably have a preference for the 2015. The medium-bodied palate displays fine tannin and crisp red berry fruit, orange peel and graphite. It doesn’t quite possess the length of the 2000, although it retains admirable precision and grace. The bottom line is that the 2001 Pichon-Baron is a good, solid Pauillac that should drink well for another two decades. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and still brimming with vigor, delivering a fine bead of acidity and a touch of cracked black pepper. A very detailed, engaging finish urges you back for another sip. A brilliant Palmer, and judging from this showing, it has another two decades of pleasure to give. This is a classy Pessac-Léognan from the Cathiard's...though, the 2016 is better!
