Bordeaux En Primeur 2020
(Update: 22 June 2021, 13:00hrs)
"The 2020 vintage marks a rare trilogy of excellent vintages.” - James Suckling
"We have a reputation in Bordeaux to say the last vintage is the best one. But we did 2018, 2019 and now 2020… after we did our tastings in the Spring I can say it is a really great vintage. It is different than 2019 with more freshness, more tension, more balance. It’s a good one... I think that we can call it a trilogy now [three consecutive high quality vintages: 2018, 2019 and 2020]." - Michel Rolland, jamessuckling.com
“On the basis of these cask samples, some stunning wines have been produced in 2020." - Jancis Robinson
Jancis Robinson reports that the Right Bank's 2020 vintage has her “falling back in love with St-Emilion” as it continues their 2018 trend of returning to freshness, stating that they are "much more fresh and expressive than they used to be". On the left, she was "shocked" by the leanness of some of the wines, but did believe they were "utterly charming" nonetheless.
“2020 vintage, a year like no other: Extreme climatic conditions and remarkably well-balanced wines..." - The Conseil Interprofessionnel Du Vin De Bordeaux
"The best 2020 wines undoubtedly have significant aging potential. It is a year when the IPTs (total phenolic index levels) are notably high, and the quality of tannins, in the best wines, is equally high." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker Wine Advocate
