Château Phélan-Ségur is one of Saint-Estèphe’s finest unclassified estates, a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel that consistently produces wines of classified-growth quality from its 83 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant vineyards on the appellation’s characteristic deep clay and gravel soils. The Gardinier family, who have owned the estate since 1985, have invested consistently in both vineyard quality and cellar technology, producing wines that have earned widespread critical respect over the past two decades and whose stylistic position between the firmness of the classic Saint-Estèphe style and the more polished, early-accessible modern Bordeaux approach has proven particularly popular with collectors who seek Saint-Estèphe character at prices below the classified growths. Phélan-Ségur has been highlighted as a standout by critics across multiple publications in both 2019 and 2022 en primeur campaigns.

The 2021 Bordeaux vintage was difficult and challenging, with a cool growing season that produced wines of lighter body and lower natural alcohol than the warm vintages that preceded and followed it, but which the most skilled and conscientious producers used to produce wines of classical freshness, aromatic precision and elegant structure that represent the opposite pole of the vintage’s character spectrum from the more opulent 2018, 2019 or 2020 expressions. For a Saint-Estèphe estate of Phélan-Ségur’s quality level and Cabernet Sauvignon dominance, the 2021’s cooler, more structured character is arguably better suited to the estate’s natural style than the warmer, more generous vintages, and the wine should develop the kind of classical Médoc complexity over its development arc that the finest traditional Bordeaux consistently achieves.

Phélan-Ségur offers collectors the genuine pleasure of Saint-Estèphe’s distinctive terroir and winemaking quality at prices that consistently underrepresent the wine’s quality relative to the classified growths of the same appellation. The 2021, in a vintage that demands careful selection, represents one of the estate’s most naturally suited releases of recent years.

Deep ruby with a refined and mineral nose of blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, iron, dried herbs and the characteristic Saint-Estèphe clay-gravel mineral depth. Medium to full-bodied with well-defined, elegant tannins, excellent natural acidity from the cooler 2021 vintage and a long, precise, classical Médoc finish. Best from 2026 through 2038.

Plenty of cabernet character with currant and blackberry and some fresh-herb undertones. Medium body. Fine, firm tannins. Refined and together. Oyster shell and hints of spices such as cloves and white pepper. Tapenade. Typical for the appellation. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot and 21% merlot. - James Suckling
