Domaine du Comte Armand is one of the most historically significant producers in the village of Pommard, whose central holding, the Clos des Epéneaux, is a 5.3-hectare monopole Premier Cru vineyard of extraordinary importance to the appellation’s identity. The clos is enclosed by its original stone walls within the heart of Pommard’s finest land, and the Comte Armand estate has been the sole owner of this vineyard since the nineteenth century. In 1990, the winemaking responsibilities fell to Paul Zinetti, and the estate was beginning its modern transformation toward the quality standard that has since made it a reference among Premier Cru Pommard producers. The 1990 vintage is regarded as one of the great Burgundy harvests of the twentieth century, producing wines of exceptional concentration, aromatic complexity and longevity across both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. In Pommard specifically, 1990 delivered a combination of deep colour, powerful tannin structure and ripe dark fruit character that required extended cellaring before revealing its full complexity. At more than three decades of age, the Comte Armand 1990 Clos des Epéneaux has entered a period of exceptional maturity, the tannins having resolved into a silky framework and the secondary aromatics of truffle, leather and earth having emerged alongside the still-vibrant primary fruit. The magnum format is of particular significance for a wine of the 1990’s structural ambition: the larger format provides slower, more even evolution across decades of cellaring and produces a wine that is measurably more complete and better-preserved than a standard bottle of the same vintage. Pommard Clos des Epéneaux in magnum from the 1990 vintage represents one of the most compelling Burgundy propositions available to serious collectors, combining the appellation’s legendary vintage with the monopole character of one of the Côte de Beaune’s most important single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. Mature garnet with brick highlights and abundant complexity. Truffle, earth, dried cherry, blackcurrant, leather and aged spice on a rich and silky palate of considerable depth. The tannins are fully resolved into the wine’s generous fruit, and the finish is long and complex with a savoury mineral persistence that speaks directly to the Clos des Epéneaux’s deep limestone subsoil. At or very near its peak now; drink through 2035. |
