Tasting Note :

Comte Armand expanded beyond its historic single-wine estate model in 1994, adding village and premier cru parcels in Pommard, Volnay, Meursault and Auxey-Duresses to complement the Clos des Epeneaux monopole. The Pommard village wine represents the estate's entry-level red Burgundy, sourced from holdings outside the Clos des Epeneaux walls and offering a more accessible and earlier-drinking expression of the estate's philosophy than the monopole premier cru.

The 1999 Burgundy vintage was generally considered warm and generous, producing wines of riper, more immediately approachable character than the austere 1996. For Pommard at the village level, the 1999 vintage delivered wines of good concentration and relatively plush tannin structure suited to medium-term ageing. At twenty-six years of age, this Pommard is now well into its mature drinking window, its initial tannins having integrated and its fruit evolving towards the earthy, tertiary complexity that characterises aged Pinot Noir from the Cote de Beaune.

The village Pommard from Comte Armand is rarely reviewed in isolation from the celebrated Clos des Epeneaux, but the estate's commitment to quality at all tiers of its range ensures that even this entry-level offering is produced with the same attention to viticulture and low-intervention winemaking that governs the flagship. For buyers who discover the 1999 at this stage of maturity, it offers the opportunity to experience aged village Pommard from one of the appellation's most respected addresses.

Drink now through 2028. This wine is in its mature drinking window and should not be cellared further. Pair with roasted duck, game preparations or strong aged cheese. Serve at 17 degrees Celsius.

Deep garnet with brick and orange highlights. The bouquet has evolved toward dried cherry, game, forest floor and a hint of leather. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, fully integrated tannins, mature fruit of real character and a warm, persistent finish. A mature village Pommard from a distinguished estate.
