Pieve Santa Restituta is Angelo Gaja’s estate in Montalcino, acquired in 1994 as the Piedmontese master’s statement of intent in Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany’s most age-worthy appellation. The estate produces three wines from its holdings in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate subzone in the southern part of the Montalcino zone: a Brunello di Montalcino blended across the estate’s finest parcels, and two single-vineyard expressions, Rennina and Sugarille, that document the estate’s finest individual terroir sites. Gaja’s involvement has brought international attention and rigorous quality standards to what was already an exceptional terroir, and the Pieve Santa Restituta wines are systematically reviewed and appreciated by all major approved publications. The Castelnuovo dell’Abate zone’s combination of galestro (clay-limestone) and alberese (compact limestone) soils, at lower elevation and warmer temperatures than the Montalcino hill’s northern zones, produces Sangiovese of exceptional ripeness, concentration and power that develops beautifully over the extended periods in barrel and bottle that the estate demands. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino vintage was warm and produced wines of very good concentration and aromatic richness that have been well received by all critics reviewing the appellation, placing it firmly in the second tier of recent classic vintages (below the legendary 2016 and 2015 but above the cooler and more linear 2014). From the Pieve Santa Restituta estate, whose Castelnuovo dell’Abate position makes it one of the warmer and more concentrated expressions in the Montalcino zone, the 2018 should have produced a wine of substantial power, rich fruit character and the structural depth that the zone’s galestro and alberese soils consistently provide. In the magnum format, the wine’s development will proceed at the ideal pace for a Brunello of this ambition: slowly, completely and with the added complexity that the larger vessel’s micro-oxidation profile permits. A magnum of Gaja’s Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello from a good vintage, still within the standard Brunello di Montalcino release window, is a proposition of outstanding quality and ageing ambition. For those who collect both Gaja’s Piedmontese and Tuscan output and for those who seek Brunello in the larger format from a producer of documented international reputation and quality, this is a genuinely significant acquisition. |
