Solaia is Antinori’s greatest single-vineyard expression, produced from the sun-drenched upper section of the Tignanello estate in the Chianti Classico zone from predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with minor proportions of Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The 2019 Solaia received 98 points from James Suckling and 97 points from Wine Spectator, confirming it among the finest Solaia vintages of the past decade and one of the most compelling Tuscan red wine acquisitions available in the magnum format. In the 1.5L magnum, the wine’s documented ageing potential over two or more decades is extended further by the slower, more complete development that the larger vessel provides, creating an acquisition of outstanding long-term value for the collector whose cellar and patience match the wine’s ambitions. James Suckling specifically praised the wine’s extraordinary combination of ripeness, mineral precision and structural depth as evidence of Antinori’s mastery of Tuscan Cabernet Sauvignon at the single-vineyard level. The 2019 Tuscan growing season was warm and produced wines of excellent concentration and aromatic character across the region’s finest estate vineyards. For the Solaia vineyard on its 8 hectares of galestro and alberese soils at 350-400 metres altitude, the 2019 delivered a Cabernet Sauvignon of impressive purity and structural depth that the Wine Spectator described as “sleek and dense” with “a racy graphite note” and “a burst of sweet bay leaf and savory accents through the finish.” The wine’s combination of the 2019’s natural concentration with Solaia’s inherent mineral character from the galestro soils and the altitude’s temperature moderation produces a wine that should develop extraordinary secondary complexity over the next decade in the magnum format. A Solaia magnum from a confirmed 98/97-point vintage represents an acquisition at the very top of the Tuscan fine wine hierarchy: one of Italy’s most consistently celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines, in the ideal format for long-term cellaring, from an excellent vintage. For the collector building a comprehensive Solaia vertical or seeking outstanding mature Tuscan red wine over the next ten to twenty years, this is an essential and irreplaceable addition. |
