Tasting Notes :

The 2019 Domaine Henri et Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain Sous Roches is a Chardonnay from one of Saint-Romain's most highly regarded vineyard sites. Produced by Domaine Henri et Gilles Buisson, a respected family estate based in Saint-Romain, the wine reflects the domaine's commitment to organic farming and terroir-focused winemaking. Over recent years, the estate has gained increasing recognition among Burgundy enthusiasts for producing precise, mineral-driven wines that showcase the unique character of this elevated Côte de Beaune village.

The Sous Roches climat is situated on limestone-rich slopes beneath rocky outcrops, a setting that gives the vineyard its name. Saint-Romain's high-altitude location and cooler microclimate help preserve freshness and acidity, while the limestone soils contribute the tension and mineral character that define the appellation. The warm and balanced 2019 vintage provided excellent ripeness while maintaining the freshness necessary for long-term balance.

The wine opens with aromas of lemon zest, yellow apple and white peach, complemented by notes of white flowers, crushed stone and subtle hazelnut. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and energetic, with a concentrated core of citrus and orchard fruit supported by vibrant acidity. The limestone terroir is evident through the wine's mineral backbone, while the finish is long, precise and lightly saline.

Saint-Romain has become increasingly sought after by Burgundy drinkers looking beyond the region's more famous villages. Located just above Meursault, the appellation often delivers a similar limestone-driven profile and freshness while remaining comparatively underappreciated. Sous Roches is widely considered one of the village's stronger sites, producing wines with notable structure and ageing potential.

"Mouthwatering cranberry acidity juxtaposes crisp red-currant and red-cherry flavors in this wine sourced from 60-year-old, biodynamic vines and vinified predominantly without stems. In contrast to the producer's more filigreed Sous Roche Absolu, this wine has a density and solidity on the palate alongside a fresh, mineral finish. It's ready now but should maintain peak through 2026 - Wine Enthusiast
