The 2019 Lucente is the second wine of Luce della Vite, one of Tuscany's most recognised modern wine estates. Created by the Frescobaldi family, Lucente was conceived to offer an earlier-drinking expression of the estate's winemaking philosophy while retaining the character and quality associated with its flagship wine, Luce. The wine combines the structure of Sangiovese with the richness and texture of Merlot, reflecting the contemporary style that has helped define the Super Tuscan category. Sourced from vineyards in Montalcino, Tuscany, the wine benefits from a combination of elevation, Mediterranean sunshine and well-drained soils that allow both varieties to achieve full ripeness while maintaining freshness. The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as one of Tuscany's strongest in recent years, producing wines with excellent concentration, balance and ageing potential. The wine opens with aromas of black cherry, blackberry and plum, complemented by notes of violet, cocoa, sweet spice and hints of cedar. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with ripe dark fruit supported by polished tannins and fresh acidity. The Merlot contributes suppleness and generosity, while the Sangiovese adds structure, vibrancy and a savoury edge. The finish is long and balanced, with lingering notes of dark fruit and spice. Lucente has become one of Tuscany's most successful premium red wines, appealing to both traditional Italian wine drinkers and those who enjoy the richer texture often associated with international varieties. It offers a more accessible introduction to the Luce estate while retaining a clear sense of place and varietal character. "Lots of blue fruit, graphite and stone aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with tight and linear tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Punchy, yet fine, suggesting two to four years of bottle will soften the wine. -- James Suckling |
