The 2020 Escocés Volante El Cismático is a Garnacha from the rugged high-altitude vineyards of Calatayud in Aragón, Spain. Produced by Escocés Volante, the project founded by Scottish Master of Wine Norrel Robertson, the wine reflects a deep commitment to old-vine Garnacha and the distinctive terroirs of inland Spain. Robertson has become one of the leading figures in the modern Garnacha movement, championing historic vineyards and site-driven winemaking throughout Aragón. The vineyards of Calatayud are particularly renowned for their old vines, poor stony soils and elevated sites, which contribute freshness and concentration to the wines.

El Cismático is sourced from old-vine Garnacha planted on limestone and rocky soils at altitude. The continental climate of Calatayud, characterised by hot days, cool nights and low rainfall, encourages slow ripening and helps preserve acidity despite the region's warm growing season. These conditions have made the area one of Spain's most important sources of expressive and age-worthy Garnacha.

The 2020 vintage opens with aromas of blackberry, red cherry and wild raspberry, layered with notes of lavender, thyme, black pepper and crushed stone. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with a concentrated core of ripe red and dark fruit supported by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. The wine balances Mediterranean generosity with a lifted, mineral character, leading to a long and savoury finish.
