The 2021 Château Carbonnieux Rouge is a classified growth from the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Bordeaux, produced by Château Carbonnieux, one of the region's oldest and most historic estates. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves in 1959, the estate is renowned for both its red and white wines, combining centuries of winemaking tradition with a focus on precision and terroir expression. Located south of the city of Bordeaux, the vineyards of Château Carbonnieux are planted on deep gravel soils over clay and limestone subsoils. These well-drained terroirs are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, allowing the grapes to ripen gradually while preserving freshness and structure. The 2021 vintage was marked by a cooler growing season, producing wines of classical proportions, aromatic complexity and refined balance. The wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, red plum and blackberry, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and elegant, with vibrant acidity supporting a core of fresh dark fruit. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and length, while mineral and savoury nuances emerge on the persistent finish. Within the market, the 2021 Château Carbonnieux Rouge represents the more classical side of modern Bordeaux. Compared with the richer and more opulent styles seen in warmer vintages, 2021 emphasises freshness, precision and terroir expression. For Bordeaux enthusiasts, it offers an excellent example of Pessac-Léognan's ability to combine Cabernet Sauvignon's structure with the refinement and aromatic complexity characteristic of the Graves region. "The 2021 Carbonnieux is gorgeous. It has more than enough mid-palate depth and overall richness to fill out its frame. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon, spice and incense all flesh out with a bit of aeration. Pliant and yet also nicely structured, the 2021 is a winner. I loved it. - Vinous |
