Les Crouzets is sourced from old-vine parcels in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, one of the most highly regarded sub-regions of the Languedoc. Situated in the foothills north of Montpellier, the area benefits from significant diurnal temperature variation, allowing grapes to achieve full ripeness while retaining freshness and aromatic complexity. Cassagne et Vitailles, founded by former Montcalmès winemaker Pierre Cassagne and partner Xavier Braujou, focuses on low-intervention viticulture and expressive, terroir-driven wines. The 2021 vintage presents a refined expression of the appellation. Predominantly Syrah and Grenache, complemented by Mourvèdre, the wine opens with aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum, layered with notes of garrigue, cracked pepper, dried herbs and subtle floral nuances. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, combining ripe dark fruit with fresh acidity and finely structured tannins. Compared with many warmer-climate southern French reds, Les Crouzets places greater emphasis on balance and precision. The cooling influence of the Larzac plateau contributes energy and lift, while the region's limestone-rich soils provide structure and mineral tension. The result is a wine that delivers both concentration and freshness, with a distinctly Mediterranean character. Well suited to grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef, game dishes and herb-driven Mediterranean cuisine, the wine can be enjoyed upon release or cellared to gain further complexity over the coming decade. |
