The 2021 Fugue de Nénin is the second wine of Château Nénin, one of the leading estates in Pomerol on Bordeaux's Right Bank. Owned by the Delon family, who also oversee the renowned Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien, Château Nénin has undergone significant investment and vineyard refinement over the past two decades, elevating its reputation among the appellation's top producers. Produced from younger vines and selected parcels within the estate, Fugue de Nénin is crafted to offer an earlier-drinking expression of the château's style while maintaining the elegance and terroir character that define Pomerol. The vineyards are planted on a combination of gravel, clay and iron-rich soils, terroirs that are particularly well suited to Merlot and contribute to the appellation's distinctive texture and complexity. The 2021 vintage was cooler and more classical in style than many recent Bordeaux vintages, producing wines with freshness, moderate alcohol levels and excellent aromatic definition. The wine opens with aromas of red plum, black cherry and blackberry, complemented by notes of violet, cedar, graphite and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and refined, with fresh dark fruit supported by vibrant acidity and polished tannins. The finish is persistent and balanced, revealing savoury nuances that add complexity without heaviness. Fugue de Nénin has become one of the more compelling second wines from Pomerol, offering insight into the character of a prestigious estate at a more accessible level. The 2021 vintage particularly highlights elegance and precision, reflecting the growing trend toward fresher and more terroir-focused Bordeaux wines. "Fresh and bright fruit with crushed berry, currant and some orange peel. Medium body. Vivid Neninh. Second wine of Nenin. - James Suckling |
