The 2021 Domaine Belargus Anjou Veau is a single-vineyard Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley, produced by Domaine Belargus, one of the most influential estates in the modern revival of Anjou. Founded with a focus on exceptional terroirs and old-vine Chenin Blanc, the domaine has quickly established itself as a benchmark producer, demonstrating the remarkable quality and ageing potential that the region can achieve. The Veau vineyard is located within Anjou's historic schist-rich landscape, where poor soils and deep-rooted vines contribute concentration, minerality and complexity. Chenin Blanc thrives in these conditions, producing wines that balance fruit intensity with freshness and structure. The 2021 vintage was cooler and more classical in character, yielding wines with vibrant acidity, precision and strong terroir expression. The wine opens with aromas of lemon zest, green apple and quince, complemented by notes of white flowers, wet stone and subtle herbal nuances. On the palate, it is focused and energetic, with bright acidity supporting a core of citrus and orchard fruit. The schist-influenced terroir contributes a pronounced mineral backbone, while the finish is long, saline and finely detailed. Domaine Belargus has played a major role in elevating the reputation of dry Chenin Blanc from Anjou, bringing greater attention to individual vineyard sites and their distinct personalities. Wines such as Veau highlight why the region is increasingly viewed alongside the world's great terroirs for age-worthy white wine. |
