The 2021 Domaine Thierry et Pascale Matrot Saint-Romain is a Chardonnay from the elevated vineyards of Saint-Romain, a village perched above Meursault and Pommard in the Côte de Beaune. Produced by Domaine Matrot, one of Burgundy's most respected family estates, the wine reflects the domaine's long-standing commitment to organic farming, terroir expression and classical Burgundian winemaking. Today, the estate is managed by sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot, continuing a family tradition that spans more than a century. Saint-Romain is one of Burgundy's highest-altitude villages, with vineyards planted on limestone-rich slopes that naturally preserve freshness and minerality. The 2021 vintage was marked by cooler growing conditions and lower yields, producing wines of precision, vibrant acidity and strong site expression. These conditions were particularly favourable for Chardonnay, resulting in wines that emphasise freshness and balance over richness. The wine opens with aromas of lemon zest, green apple and pear, complemented by notes of white flowers, brioche and crushed stone. On the palate, it is energetic and finely structured, with bright acidity supporting a core of citrus and orchard fruit. The limestone terroir contributes a pronounced mineral backbone, while subtle textural richness adds balance to the wine's tension and freshness. The finish is long, precise and saline. Saint-Romain has become increasingly sought after by Burgundy enthusiasts looking beyond the region's more famous villages. Its higher-altitude vineyards often deliver remarkable freshness and mineral character, while remaining relatively underappreciated compared with neighbouring Meursault. Domaine Matrot has long been one of the reference-point producers for the appellation, producing wines that consistently highlight the village's distinctive identity. |
