The 2022 Château Beychevelle is the Grand Vin of one of Saint-Julien's most iconic estates. Classified as a Fourth Growth (Quatrième Cru Classé) in the 1855 Classification, Château Beychevelle occupies a prime position along the Gironde estuary and has long been admired for producing wines that combine the structure of Saint-Julien with an uncommon degree of elegance and charm. The estate spans approximately 90 hectares of deep gravel soils, ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Known as the "Versailles of the Médoc" for its striking château and gardens, Beychevelle is one of Bordeaux's most recognisable names. The estate's emblem—a ship lowering its sails—stems from a local legend associated with the Duke of Épernon, Admiral of France, whose presence supposedly required passing vessels to salute by lowering their sails. This tradition gave rise to the name "Baisse Voile," which eventually became Beychevelle.
"The 2022 Château Beychevelle comes from 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in barrel. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by an absolutely stunning nose of crème de cassis and plum fruit intermixed with leafy herbs, spring flowers, and crushed stone-like minerality. This full-bodied Beychevelle has a pure, elegant mouthfeel, finely polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is brilliant stuff that already offers pleasure today yet will cruise over the following two to three decades. It's the finest Beychevelle I've tasted. - Jeb Dunnuck The 2022 Beychevelle has a succinct bouquet that has tightened up since I tasted it in barrel. It retains wonderful precision and focus, pure black fruit, black olive compote and subtle tobacco scents. It unfurls with aeration yet doesn't want to give too much away. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. Like Gruaud Larose this year, there is a newfound sense of clarity that lifts this 2022 above recent vintages. This is unequivocally one of the most elegant Beychevelles on the finish and it lingers temptingly in the mouth. It’s a benchmark wine for this Saint-Julien—bravo to head winemaker Philippe Blanc and his team. - Vinous The 2022 Beychevelle has turned out nicely, offering up aromas of ripe berry compote mingled with notions of petals, espresso roast and rich, toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied, sweet and fleshy, it's velvety and layered, with plenty of powdery tannin lurking behind its ripe core of fruit. It's a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Fans of contemporary Beychevelle's rich, lusty style will love it. - Wine Advocate |
