The 2022 Château de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet Clos du Château de la Maltroye Rouge is a Pinot Noir from one of Chassagne-Montrachet's most historic monopole vineyards. Produced by Château de la Maltroye, a family-owned estate with roots dating back to the 18th century, the wine reflects the domaine's reputation for producing both distinguished white and red Burgundies from some of the Côte de Beaune's finest terroirs. Clos du Château de la Maltroye is a walled vineyard located directly behind the château and is owned entirely by the estate. As a monopole site, it offers a unique and consistent expression of Chassagne-Montrachet Pinot Noir. While the village is best known for Chardonnay, its red wines have long been admired for combining Côte de Beaune charm with structure and depth. The vineyard's clay-limestone soils provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, producing wines that balance fruit purity with mineral complexity. The warm and successful 2022 vintage delivered excellent ripeness while retaining freshness and balance. The wine opens with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, layered with notes of rose petal, baking spice, forest floor and subtle earthy nuances. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and silky, with vibrant acidity supporting a core of bright red fruit. Fine-grained tannins provide structure, while the limestone-rich terroir contributes freshness and precision through the long, elegant finish. Although Chassagne-Montrachet is often associated with great white wines, top red examples such as Clos du Château de la Maltroye demonstrate the village's overlooked potential for Pinot Noir. The monopole status of the vineyard and the estate's long history of stewardship add an additional layer of identity and authenticity to the wine. "An equally ripe yet slightly fresher nose blends notes of spice, pepper and earth with those of red currant, plum and a very subtle suggestion of wood. There is even better verve to the seductively textured, if not especially dense, medium-bodied flavors that possess evident minerality, all wrapped in sappy, lingering, dusty and youthfully austere finish that is the most structured in the range. Excellent with fine development potential. - Allen Meadows Burghound |
