The 2023 Terlano Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc Winkl is one of the flagship wines of Cantina Terlano, a historic cooperative founded in 1893 and widely regarded as one of Italy's finest producers of white wine. Winkl has become a benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc from Alto Adige, demonstrating how the region's alpine climate and mineral-rich soils can produce wines of remarkable freshness, complexity and longevity. The vineyards are located on the slopes surrounding the village of Terlano, where significant day-night temperature variation helps preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. The combination of porphyry-based volcanic soils and a cool mountain climate contributes to the wine's distinctive balance of fruit expression and mineral precision. The 2023 vintage opens with expressive aromas of grapefruit, lime and passion fruit, complemented by notes of elderflower, gooseberry and fresh herbs. On the palate, it is vibrant and finely structured, with bright acidity supporting a concentrated core of citrus and tropical fruit. A pronounced mineral character and subtle saline note carry through to the long, refreshing finish. The 2023 Terlano Sauvignon Blanc Winkl showcases a more refined and terroir-driven style of Sauvignon Blanc, emphasising precision and texture rather than overt aromatic intensity. The wine's balance, freshness and complexity have made it one of Alto Adige's most recognised white wines and a reference point for the variety in northern Italy. "Flavors of melon, grapefruit sorbet, lemon curd, chive blossoms and pickled ginger glide across the palate of this creamy white, showing good length and focus. Expressive without excessive weight, while the mineral-driven finish is sculpted by racy acidity. Drink now through 2033. 29,000 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. - Wine Spectator |
