Tasting Notes

Abbazia San Giorgio is a small artisanal winery located on the volcanic island of Pantelleria, situated between Sicily and Tunisia. Founded by Ciro Caravà, the estate has become one of the island's leading natural wine producers. After working alongside the legendary Pantelleria winemaker Gabrio Bini, Caravà established his own estate with a philosophy centred on organic farming, indigenous grape varieties and minimal intervention in the cellar. The vineyards are planted on volcanic soils and are cultivated using the island's traditional alberello pantesco bush-vine system, recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Fermentations are spontaneous with native yeasts, while sulphur additions are kept to a minimum, resulting in wines that express the island's distinctive maritime and volcanic terroir.

Grape Variety: Varies by cuvée (the estate produces wines from indigenous varieties including Zibibbo/Muscat of Alexandria, Catarratto, Grillo, Nero d'Avola and Perricone)

Viticulture: Certified organic, dry-farmed bush vines on volcanic soils

Vinification: Native yeast fermentation with minimal intervention and low sulphur additions.

Style: Distinctive natural wines characterised by saline minerality, vibrant acidity, Mediterranean herbs and volcanic complexity. Depending on the cuvée, the wines range from textured skin-contact whites to elegant reds, all emphasising purity, freshness and terroir expression.

As "Abbazia San Giorgio 2019" refers to several different wines produced by the estate, there is no single tasting note for the 2019 vintage without the specific cuvée. Across the range, the wines typically display aromas of citrus peel, orchard fruit, wild herbs, sea salt and volcanic stone in the whites, while the reds show red berries, dark cherries, Mediterranean spices and earthy mineral nuances. The palate is generally energetic and textured, with bright acidity, savoury complexity and a persistent saline finish that reflects Pantelleria's volcanic landscape and maritime climate.
