Barbacàn is one of Valtellina's most acclaimed artisan producers, founded by brothers Angelo and Luca Sega in the village of San Giacomo di Teglio in Lombardy. The estate farms just six hectares of steep, terraced vineyards perched high on the slopes of the Alps, where many vines are over 80 years old. Viticulture is carried out organically with meticulous manual work, as the dramatic terraces make mechanisation impossible. Barbacàn is dedicated to preserving Valtellina's historic field blends, cultivating Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) alongside rare indigenous varieties such as Rossola, Rossolino Rosa, Brugnola, Pignola, Negrera and Chiavennaschino. Spontaneous fermentations, minimal intervention and restrained oak ageing produce wines that capture the freshness, minerality and alpine character of this unique mountain terroir.

The Rosso Alpi Retiche is a vibrant alpine red made predominantly from Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) with small proportions of traditional indigenous grapes grown as historic field blends. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts and approximately 20 days of skin maceration, followed by around eight months of maturation in stainless steel and older oak barriques. Medium-bodied and energetic, the wine emphasises purity of fruit, lively acidity and mineral precision rather than oak influence or extraction, making it an elegant introduction to Barbacàn's distinctive style.

Bright ruby red with lifted aromas of wild cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, complemented by rose petals, alpine herbs and subtle smoky mineral notes. The palate is fresh and finely textured, offering juicy red berry fruit layered with hints of bergamot, black tea and crushed stone. Vibrant acidity and refined, chalky tannins provide structure and tension, while nuances of earth and smoke add complexity. The finish is long, savoury and exceptionally pure, reflecting the cool-climate elegance and mountain freshness that define the finest wines of Valtellina.
