Tasting Notes

Jérôme Prévost is regarded as one of Champagne's most influential artisan growers. Based in the village of Gueux in the Montagne de Reims, he established La Closerie in the late 1990s after receiving mentorship from the legendary Anselme Selosse. His philosophy centres on meticulous vineyard work, spontaneous fermentation, extended ageing in seasoned oak barrels, and minimal intervention.

With production measured in only a few thousand bottles each year, La Closerie has become one of Champagne's most sought-after cult producers. The wines are prized for their distinctive expression of Pinot Meunier and their Burgundian depth and texture.

The "&" (Esperluette) LC21 is the second cuvée in the La Closerie range. While Les Béguines comes exclusively from Prévost's historic old-vine vineyard, the "&" is produced from carefully selected parcels in Gueux and Janvry, all planted to 100% Pinot Meunier.

The LC21 release is based on the 2021 harvest, with reserve wines incorporated to add complexity and consistency. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in old oak barrels, followed by extended lees ageing and a low dosage, preserving the purity and mineral character of the wine. The "&" cuvée is typically more approachable in its youth than Les Béguines while retaining the house's signature concentration and precision.

The LC21 offers an expressive and generous style balanced by remarkable freshness. Aromas of ripe apple, pear, orange zest and quince mingle with notes of brioche, toasted almond, beeswax and white flowers. The palate is layered and textural, combining creamy fruit with chalky minerality, vibrant acidity and a persistent saline finish. Although approachable upon release, it has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next decade.

" Described the wine as generous and immediately expressive, with aromas of strawberry, orange sherbet, brioche, shortbread, white flowers and almond. He praised its pure fruit, layered texture, salted citrus finish and excellent ageing potential. " -- Jeb Dunnuck

" Highlighted dried orchard fruit, crushed flowers, ginger, spice and dried herbs. He noted that while it has slightly less depth than Les Béguines, it is exceptionally charming, open-knit and expressive in its youth. " -- Vinous, Antonio Galloni
