Tasting Note :

Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is one of the finest and most consistently acclaimed dry white wines produced anywhere in Bordeaux, grown from old-vine Sauvignon Blanc (70%) and Sémillon (30%) in the estate’s classified Pessac-Léognan vineyard, and produced with a combination of barrel fermentation, extended lees ageing and the meticulous selection that the estate applies to its white wine programme with as much rigour as to the celebrated red. The wine’s production is remarkably small, typically between 600 and 1,000 cases, making it one of the rarest dry white Bordeaux produced at any classified estate, and its quality has attracted extraordinary critical recognition: the 2020 vintage received 99 points from James Suckling, 97 points from Wine Advocate, 97 points from Wine Enthusiast, 96 points from Decanter and 95 points from Wine Spectator, one of the most impressive multi-publication performances of any dry Bordeaux blanc in recent memory.

The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc was described by James Suckling as one of the finest white wines he tasted from any country in that tasting campaign, citing the wine’s extraordinary combination of concentration, mineral freshness and aromatic complexity as evidence of Domaine de Chevalier’s absolute mastery of white wine production in the Graves appellation. The 2020 vintage was warm and concentrated across Pessac-Léognan, but the estate’s meticulous vineyard management and precise harvest timing produced a white wine of exceptional balance rather than simply power, maintaining the mineral freshness and Sauvignon Blanc aromatic precision that makes Domaine de Chevalier Blanc one of the most sought-after dry white wines in France, regardless of appellation.

Domaine de Chevalier Blanc’s critical following is extraordinary for a wine whose global production barely reaches 1,000 cases in the finest vintages: it sits alongside Haut-Brion Blanc, Laville Haut-Brion and Pape Clément Blanc as one of the reference white wines of Pessac-Léognan, and the 2020 vintage’s near-perfect critical consensus confirms this as one of the finest expressions of this extraordinary wine produced in the modern era.

Pale gold with an extraordinary nose of white peach, lemon cream, wild blackcurrant leaf, chalk mineral, toasted almond and the distinctive smoky-mineral character of Pessac-Léognan’s finest white wine terroir. Full-bodied with exceptional concentration, vibrant natural acidity and a very long, mineral, structured finish of remarkable complexity and length. Best from 2025 through 2045.

A dense, creamy DC white with lots of rich cooked-apple, mineral, cream and praline character. It’s full and very layered with chewy intensity and a long, bitter-lemon and almost honey finish. Pretty phenolic tension, too. - James Suckling

Another terrific vintage for this wine, the 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc unwinds in the glass with aromas of nectarine, pear, nutmeg, passionflower and hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, with racy acids and a bright, pure profile, it nips at the heels of the brilliant and somewhat racier, more refined 2019. - Wine Advocate
