Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the most dramatically transformed and rapidly ascending estates in Pessac-Léognan, whose acquisition by Guillaume Pouthier and his family has produced a remarkable quality revolution since 2012, converting the estate to biodynamic viticulture, building a gravity-fed circular cellar designed by Philippe Starck and producing wines of extraordinary precision and depth that have attracted the highest critical recognition of any Pessac-Léognan estate outside the very top tier. The 2021 vintage received outstanding scores across all five approved publications: Vinous (Antonio Galloni) awarded 98 points and described the wine as “very possibly the wine of the vintage,” noting its “mind-blowing intensity and dynamic energy,” while James Suckling awarded 97 points, Decanter 96 points and Wine Advocate (Robert Parker) 95 points. The blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot provides a distinctively Pessac-Léognan character of mineral graphite precision alongside an aromatic complexity that the Cabernet Franc contribution amplifies uniquely in this terroir. The 2021 Bordeaux vintage was challenging for red wines across the region, with frost and mildew complications requiring exceptional vineyard precision to produce wines of genuine quality, but Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, with its biodynamic farming and the experience of a team who managed similar challenges in 2017 and 2018, emerged with what Galloni described as one of the wines of the vintage in any appellation. The wine was bottled in late September 2023, much later than most, allowing an extended élevage that produced exceptional aromatic expression and textural integration. Galloni noted “tobacco, mocha, cedar, leather, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and plum saturate the palate in a wine that dazzles from start to finish.” Les Carmes Haut-Brion has established itself as one of the essential fine Bordeaux discoveries of the past decade, and the 2021’s extraordinary Vinous 98-point score alongside three other approved publications at 95-97 confirms its status as one of the standout wines of a vintage in which consistent quality required exceptional farming and winemaking commitment. For collectors who seek Pessac-Léognan of the very highest ambition at prices still substantially below the appellation’s most commercially prominent names, this is an essential acquisition. The 2021 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is very possibly the wine of the vintage. Vertical and explosive, the 2021 possesses mind-blowing intensity and dynamic energy. Tobacco, mocha, cedar, leather, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and plum saturate the palate in a wine that dazzles from start to finish. — Vinous The texture and weight make this wine classy and unique with subtle berries, chocolate, bark and hints of cloves and dried flowers. Graphite. Medium- to full-bodied with very integrated, fine and lightly chewy tannins with lots of polish and focus. — James Suckling |
