Domaine Robert Ampeau & Fils, based in Puligny-Montrachet, is one of Burgundy's most distinctive traditional estates. Founded in the early 20th century, the domaine became renowned under Robert Ampeau for an unusual philosophy: releasing wines only after extended ageing in the estate's own cellars, often 15 to 25 years after harvest. This practice allows collectors to purchase mature Burgundy with impeccable provenance. The estate owns around 10 hectares of vineyards across Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Volnay, Beaune and Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Santenots is a celebrated Premier Cru vineyard located in the commune of Meursault but, because it is planted to Pinot Noir, it is entitled to the Volnay Premier Cru appellation. The site is known for producing some of Volnay's most structured and age-worthy wines, combining the village's hallmark elegance with greater depth and power. The outstanding 1990 Burgundy vintage produced concentrated, long-lived wines, and Robert Ampeau's extended cellaring has allowed this bottle to mature slowly under ideal conditions.

Now fully mature, the 1990 displays a complex bouquet of dried cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, forest floor, black tea, truffle, mushroom, sweet herbs and gentle spice. The palate is silky yet surprisingly vibrant, with resolved tannins, lively acidity and flavours of red currant, bramble, leather and earthy minerality. Despite its age, the wine retains freshness and precision, illustrating both the quality of the 1990 vintage and the domaine's renowned ageing philosophy.
