Domaine A.F. Gros’s Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is produced from a well-sited parcel within this historic 50-hectare walled vineyard, whose original Cistercian monopole character and extraordinary prestige in the history of Burgundy make it one of the most recognisable and sought-after addresses in the entire Côte de Nuits. Anne-Françoise Gros applies the same careful approach at Clos de Vougeot that distinguishes her Richebourg and Échezeaux: natural fermentation, restrained new oak and a minimal-intervention philosophy that allows the vineyard’s character to express itself without the over-extraction or excessive tannin that the clos’s reputation for power can sometimes produce in less carefully managed cellars. The parcel’s position within the clos is a material determinant of quality, and A.F. Gros’s holding is consistently described as producing wine of genuine Clos de Vougeot precision and mineral depth from the upper central portion of the vineyard. Clos de Vougeot presents both an extraordinary opportunity and a significant challenge to any producer: the vineyard’s scale, its fragmentation among more than eighty current owners and the wide variation in soil depth and drainage across its 50 hectares from the upper slope (with the finest, most limestone-rich and well-drained soils) to the lower alluvial plain means that the quality and character of the wine depends entirely on the specific parcel and the producer’s approach. The best Clos de Vougeot, from well-sited parcels farmed by quality-focused producers, produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary mineral density and ageing potential that can rival the finest Vosne-Romanée Grand Crus. The 2022 vintage was warm and produced wines of generous concentration and approachable tannin structure that should reward early appreciation. Clos de Vougeot from A.F. Gros provides collectors with access to one of Burgundy’s most historically revered Grand Crus through a proven and careful producer at prices substantially below those of DRC, Leroy or the most commercially prominent domaines. For those who seek Grand Cru Burgundy provenance and genuine quality without the most extreme scarcity premiums, this is a well-founded and reliable acquisition. The vines were planted in 1904. A richer deeper ruby purple. A flamboyant pure fruit on the nose, sort of unexpected for Clos Vougeot. Excellent tension on the palate, all the structure that a Clos Vougeot needs but nothing in excess. Seamless, sensual, yet with all the strictness it should have. Very fine. Drink from 2032-2040. - Jasper Morris |
