The 2011 Viñedo Chadwick, with a wine-searcher aggregate of 94/100 across approved publications, represents a step up in critical recognition from the 2009 and reflects the improving quality trajectory of this estate over the course of the 2010s, as Eduardo Chadwick’s continuing refinement of both viticulture and winemaking at the Puente Alto vineyard progressively elevated the wine’s consistency and international standing. The 2011 Maipo Valley growing season was characterised by cooler conditions than the warmer recent vintages, and in Chile as in many of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon regions, the cooler years consistently produce wines of greater aromatic elegance, finer tannin structure and longer-term ageing potential than the more immediately generous warm years. At over a decade from harvest, the 2011 Viñedo Chadwick will have developed the secondary complexity and integration of a well-aged Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon at an interesting and rewarding stage of its trajectory. Viñedo Chadwick’s approach at the Puente Alto vineyard involves farming with very low yields from old vines established on the vineyard’s specific gravel and clay soil profile, with natural fermentation in open-top vats and ageing in French barriques for a period calibrated to the vintage’s natural character. The 2011’s cooler growing season should have produced a wine of particular aromatic freshness and fine-grained tannin structure that rewards the patience required to allow it to reach its second decade of development before opening. For collectors who follow the Viñedo Chadwick programme with attention across multiple vintages and who wish to compare the cooler 2011 with the warmer, more generous 2022, this represents an important and well-timed comparative acquisition from Chile’s most celebrated single-vineyard estate. Deep ruby with a refined nose of blackcurrant, graphite, dried herb, cedar, tobacco leaf and the distinctive cool-vintage mineral precision of Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon in its most elegant expression. Full-bodied with well-structured tannins, excellent natural acidity and a long, herb-edged, mineral finish. Drink now through 2033. |
