Tasting notes :

Françoise Bedel is the pioneering biodynamic grower-producer in Crouttes-sur-Marne in the Vallée de la Marne whose commitment to living soils and natural winemaking has established the estate as one of the most respected and philosophically consistent addresses in the grower Champagne movement. L’Âme de la Terre, translating as ‘the soul of the earth,’ is the estate’s prestige cuvée and most age-worthy wine, produced from a selection of the finest Pinot Meunier-dominant plots within the domaine’s biodynamically farmed holdings and aged for many years on the lees before disgorgement. The lot designation AX020121 identifies the specific disgorgement date, January 2021, indicating that this wine spent approximately 18 to 19 years on the lees before release.

A 2002 Champagne with a 2021 disgorgement is an extraordinary proposition by any measure. The 2002 vintage is widely regarded as the finest of the early 2000s and among the greatest Champagne vintages of the modern era, producing base wines of exceptional ripeness, natural acidity and structural depth that have proved capable of extraordinary development over two decades. Françoise Bedel’s L’Âme de la Terre, produced from old-vine Pinot Meunier on the Marne valley limestone and clay soils, will have spent nearly two decades on the lees developing autolytic complexity of a depth that is simply impossible to achieve in the standard three-to-five year ageing window of most Champagnes, including most vintage Champagnes from the great houses. The result is a wine of unique character: not a museum piece but a living Champagne of extraordinary complexity and freshness simultaneously.

Late-disgorged vintage Champagne from biodynamically farmed grower estates represents one of the most niche and sought-after categories in the entire appellation. The combination of the 2002 vintage’s exceptional quality, the near-two-decade lees ageing and Bedel’s biodynamic philosophy applied to old-vine Marne valley Pinot Meunier creates a wine that is genuinely one of a kind. For collectors who have followed Bedel’s work with attention, or who seek mature vintage Champagne of documented provenance and uncompromising quality, L’Âme de la Terre AX020121 is one of the most compelling offerings currently available.

Deep amber gold with fine, long-lived bubbles and a complex, extraordinarily developed nose of honey, toasted walnut, dried apricot, beeswax, clove, aged Pinot Meunier fruit, earthy mineral depth and the haunting tertiary complexity of nearly two decades on the lees. Full-bodied with a rich, creamy mousse, excellent residual acidity providing freshness and a very long, complex, vinous finish of great distinction. Drink now; best through 2032.
