The NV Benoît Déhu Cuvée Initiation Brut Nature is a grower Champagne from one of the most distinctive artisan producers in the Vallée de la Marne. Benoît Déhu represents the eighth generation of his family's Champagne-growing history, but after gaining experience at Bollinger, he launched his own micro-production project focused on biodynamic farming, low-intervention winemaking and terroir expression. Production remains extremely limited, making his wines highly sought after among Champagne enthusiasts and collectors. Cuvée Initiation is a Blanc de Noirs, produced from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier sourced from two carefully selected parcels in Fossoy. The Pinot Meunier originates from the biodynamically farmed La Rue des Noyers vineyard, while the Pinot Noir comes from a small clay- and sand-rich parcel planted with massal selections of Pommard clones. Fermentation and ageing take place in oak barrels, with the wine spending extended time on lees before disgorgement. No dosage is added, resulting in a Brut Nature Champagne that emphasises purity and vineyard character. The wine opens with aromas of lemon zest, white flowers and crisp orchard fruit, complemented by notes of toasted bread, hazelnut and wet stone. On the palate, it is energetic and finely textured, with a persistent mousse supporting layers of citrus, pear and subtle savoury complexity. The absence of dosage highlights the wine's mineral tension, while oak ageing contributes depth and structure. The finish is long, saline and remarkably focused. Benoît Déhu has become one of the leading names in the grower Champagne movement, particularly for his work with Pinot Meunier and biodynamic viticulture. Cuvée Initiation serves as an excellent introduction to his style, combining the intensity and individuality of artisan Champagne with the precision and freshness expected from a top Brut Nature bottling. |
