The Brut Rose from Champagne Roger Pouillon et Fils is the estate's rose cuvee, produced by Fabrice Pouillon using Pinot Noir from Premier Cru and Grand Cru parcels in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and neighbouring villages. Like all Pouillon wines, the rose is produced with the same organic farming principles and careful cellar management that characterise the estate's approach to the Solera and its other cuvees. The magnum format slows development and suits formal dining occasions. Champagne rose from an artisan grower in the Vallee de la Marne draws on a region whose Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir provide the red-fruit character that distinguishes the style from the Blanc de Blancs of the Cote des Blancs. Roger Pouillon's Grand Cru Ay parcels contribute Pinot Noir of particular structure and depth, the appellation's famous cailloux ronds (rounded chalk pebbles) transmitting a specific mineral quality to the berry fruit. The brut dosage provides accessibility from release while retaining sufficient structure for short-term cellaring. Mareuil-sur-Ay Premier Cru occupies a significant position in the Vallée de la Marne's hierarchy, sharing its gravelly, chalk-mixed soils with Ay Grand Cru to the east and providing conditions for wines of unusual structure and aromatic depth. Fabrice Pouillon's biodynamic approach applies as fully to the rose's fruit sourcing as to the estate's other cuvees, reflecting a whole-vineyard philosophy of natural farming that runs through every wine in the range. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees Celsius as an aperitif, with salmon, sushi, strawberry desserts or light charcuterie. The magnum format provides excellent value for dining occasions requiring a generous presentation. Vivid salmon pink with fine, persistent bubbles. Aromas of red cherry, strawberry, rose petal and a subtle yeasty freshness from the lees ageing. The palate is fresh and medium-bodied with good red fruit character, precise acidity and a clean brut finish. Charming and well-balanced. |
