Domaine Robert Ampeau & Fils is one of Burgundy's most respected traditional estates. Based in Meursault and now managed by Michel Ampeau, the domaine is famous for its unique philosophy of late release. Rather than selling wines shortly after bottling, the family ages them in its own cool cellars—sometimes for decades—before release, ensuring the wines have entered an expressive stage of maturity. This practice has earned the estate a cult following among collectors seeking mature Burgundy with impeccable provenance. The 1999 vintage is regarded as one of Burgundy's finest of the late 1990s. It produced Chardonnays with generous fruit, excellent balance and outstanding ageing potential. Robert Ampeau's Meursault was vinified traditionally, with fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels (around 20–25% new oak) for approximately 10 months before spending many additional years ageing in the domaine's cellars prior to release Now fully mature, the 1999 Meursault offers an expressive bouquet of ripe pear, baked apple, white peach, toasted hazelnut, brioche, honey and flinty minerality. On the palate it is rich and creamy, with flavours of roasted almonds, buttered toast and citrus peel balanced by vibrant acidity. The finish is long, saline and elegant, demonstrating why 1999 remains a benchmark vintage for mature Meursault.
