Tasting Notes

Domaine Robert Ampeau & Fils is one of Burgundy's most distinctive traditional domaines. Established in the 19th century in Meursault, the family became renowned for an unusual philosophy: wines were matured for many years in the domaine's own cellars before release. Rather than selling wines soon after bottling, the Ampeau family only released vintages when they believed they had begun to show their full complexity, allowing buyers to enjoy mature Burgundy without the uncertainty of long-term cellaring.

Les Charmes is among Meursault's largest and most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards. The name derives from the old French word chaume, referring to open grassland before vines were planted. Its limestone and marl soils consistently produce Chardonnay that combines richness with precision, making it one of the benchmark terroirs of Meursault.

The 1999 vintage is now fully mature and showcases the classic evolution of great white Burgundy. Aromas of white flowers, candied lemon, toasted hazelnut, beeswax and butter are complemented by hints of wet stone and honey. On the palate, the wine is broad and creamy yet retains impressive freshness, with a silky texture, vibrant mineral acidity and a long, elegant finish. The balance between richness and tension is a hallmark of both the vineyard and the domaine's ageing philosophy.
