Tasting Note :

Champagne Charlie is the prestige cuvée of Charles Heidsieck, a wine that takes its name from the nickname bestowed on the house’s 19th-century founder during his legendary promotional tours of the United States. The original Champagne Charlie was produced as a vintage wine through the 1980s, with the 1981 and 1985 editions achieving iconic status among Champagne collectors. Cellar Master Cyril Brun’s decision to revive the cuvée in 2022 as a non-vintage blend based on the 2016 base vintage but incorporating 78% reserve wines — some dating back two decades — was a conscious homage to the original wine’s philosophy of complexity through age, rather than vintage purity.

The current Champagne Charlie (cellared in 2017) is blended from 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir, with the reserve wines providing a breadth and depth of flavour that no single vintage could match. Brun drew on the house’s extensive library of reserve lots to construct a wine of exceptional aromatic complexity, selecting for mature orchard fruit, brioche depth and the distinctive buttery pastry note that characterises aged reserve Champagne at its best. The wooden box presentation reflects the status and ambition of this cuvée within the Charles Heidsieck range, and positions it clearly within the prestige Champagne category alongside names like Dom Pérignon, Krug and Salon.

Wine Advocate awarded the Champagne Charlie 96 points, Decanter 97 and Wine Enthusiast 100 — a perfect score that represents one of the most striking critical assessments of any non-vintage Champagne in recent memory. Decanter described a wine of “golden orchard fruit, brioche, honeycomb, peaches, spices and buttery pastry” that is “full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a layered core of fruit, racy acids and a beautifully refined pinpoint mousse.” At 78% reserve wine content, this is arguably closer to a multi-vintage Champagne than a traditional non-vintage, and the depth of flavour reflects this exceptional reserve component.

Deep gold with very fine persistent bubbles and a fabulously complex nose of golden orchard fruit, brioche, honeycomb, white peach, beeswax, spice and a long-aged reserve complexity. Full-bodied and enveloping on the palate with a layered core of fruit, excellent natural acidity, a beautifully refined mousse and a finish of great persistence and complexity. Drink from 2025 through 2040.

Bursting with aromas of golden orchard fruit, brioche, honeycomb, peaches, spices and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a layered core of fruit, racy acids and a beautifully refined pinpoint mousse. A compelling, flamboyant wine. Drink 2023–2040. — Wine Advocate
