For Benoit Girardin, Clos Rousseau represents one of the estate's core references: a wine from soils his family has farmed for generations that demonstrates the full potential of Santenay as an appellation. The 2021 vintage at this site yielded particularly concentrated fruit due to the spring frost damage that reduced overall yields across the estate, with the surviving crop showing excellent density and natural balance.

Santenay 1er Cru remains genuinely undervalued relative to the premiers crus of its northern neighbours Chassagne-Montrachet and Volnay, offering comparable site specificity and ageing potential at a fraction of the cost. Clos Rousseau specifically is recommended consistently by Burgundy specialists as among the most reliable of the appellation's premier cru lieux-dits, and it appears regularly in the cellars of serious collectors who know the village well.

Deep ruby with purple hints. The nose opens with blackberry, dark cherry, a hint of earthy iron and a floral violet thread. The palate is medium-full bodied and firmly structured, with dense but fine tannins, good freshness and a persistent, mineral finish. One of the more age-worthy wines in this producer's range.
