Cantina Terlano is among the most celebrated cooperative wineries in Italy, a distinction it has earned through decades of consistently producing white wines of extraordinary quality and age-worthiness from the Alto Adige’s volcanic porphyry and quartzite soils above the town of Terlano. The cooperative’s Rarity cuvée represents its most ambitious and historically significant offering: a Pinot Bianco produced from the estate’s oldest vine parcels and aged for a minimum of ten years in the cellar before release, a practice that has been pursued without interruption since the early twentieth century and that demonstrates, year after year, the extraordinary ageing potential of Alto Adige Pinot Bianco from the finest terraces above the village. The 2011 Rarity was released approximately a decade after harvest, arriving on the market in the early 2020s as a fully developed, mature wine of great complexity. The terroir around Terlano is among the most distinctive in the entire Alto Adige appellation: soils of volcanic porphyry and quartzite, formed by the interaction of igneous and metamorphic geology that is unique within the broader calcareous Alpine context of South Tyrol, impart a distinctive mineral signature to the wines characterised by extraordinary freshness, a reductive, almost flinty quality in youth and the ability to develop extraordinary complexity over decades in bottle without losing their primary freshness. The 2011 Alto Adige vintage was very warm, producing white wines of unusual concentration and richness, and the ten-plus years of cellaring by Terlano before the Rarity’s release have transformed those raw materials into a wine of unique complexity and depth. The Rarity is one of the most unusual and intellectually compelling wines produced anywhere in Italy: a Pinot Bianco, a variety not typically associated with fine wine of this ambition, aged by the producer for over a decade and released in a state of maturity that allows collectors to appreciate the grape’s potential for complex, long-lived white wine with no additional cellaring required. Terlano’s Rarity has attracted sustained attention from Italian wine specialists, collectors who follow Alto Adige with serious attention, and enthusiasts who seek mature white wines of documented quality from producers of the highest standing. Deep gold with a complex and evolved nose of roasted hazelnut, lemon confit, white truffle, smoke, lanolin, beeswax and the distinctive mineral saltiness of Terlano’s volcanic porphyry soils. Full-bodied with remarkable freshness for a wine of its age, excellent acidity, a rich and layered palate and an extraordinarily long, smoky, mineral finish. Drinking at peak now through 2033. Exuding awe-inspiring maturity; laden with plump nectarine, peach, melon and yellow blossom with a toasty generosity and enlivening mineral undertone. Ample, rich and very long. - Decanter |
