Tasting Notes

Founded in 1957 by Giuseppe Cencioni, Capanna is one of the historic estates in the Montosoli area, north of Montalcino—widely regarded as one of the appellation's finest crus for Sangiovese. Today, the estate remains family-owned and is managed by the Cencioni family, farming approximately 23 hectares of vineyards. Capanna is known for its traditional approach, fermenting with native yeasts and ageing its Brunello in large Slavonian oak casks to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression. Wines from Montosoli are often noted for their finesse, aromatic complexity and exceptional ageing potential.

Grape Variety: 100% Sangiovese (Brunello clone)

Style: Full-bodied, dry red wine

Winemaking: Traditional fermentation followed by extended maturation in large Slavonian oak casks and bottle ageing before release.

Character: The 2018 vintage is more elegant and approachable than the powerful 2016 or 2019 vintages, offering bright acidity, refined tannins and excellent balance while retaining the structure expected of classic Brunello.

" Ripe aromas of cherry, leather, dried shiitake mushroom, licorice and herbs. Medium-bodied with elegant concentration, layered wild strawberry, lavender and fresh herbs, finishing long and refined. Drink 2024–2036. " -- Jeb Dunnuck

" A classic Brunello showing aromas of cherry, orange peel, graphite, fennel and mint. The palate combines vibrant cherry fruit, earthy notes and bitter orange with polished tannins, lively acidity and subtle anise spice. " -- Wine Enthusiast

" Displays sour cherries, dried roses, porcini mushrooms, rosemary and citrus notes. Bright, savoury and medium-bodied with fine tannins, freshness and excellent balance. Recommended from 2024 onward. " -- James Suckling

" An open, mature expression of Brunello with savoury character and early accessibility, offering a softer interpretation of the vintage. " -- Robert Parker
