This is the magnum presentation of the celebrated 2018 Nervi-Conterno Gattinara Vigna Valferana, the first single-vineyard Gattinara produced under Roberto Conterno's ownership of the historic Nervi estate. The wine is the same as the standard bottle in every respect, drawn from the west-facing Valferana vineyard at 300 to 350 metres altitude on volcanic soils and aged in large casks for a minimum of four years. The magnum format slows the wine's development, providing an extended window of optimal drinking and enhanced suitability for cellar ageing and formal dining occasions. Vinous (Antonio Galloni) awarded 96 points, describing the wine as 'explosive right out of the glass, with supporting veins of tannin carrying a core of red fruit, cinnamon, rose petal, blood orange, mint and white pepper. The Valferana is complex and wonderfully deep from start to finish. The 2018 is a special wine.' The Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) awarded 95 points, noting the volcanic soils' contribution to 'an etched and very focused expression of Nebbiolo, tightly chiselled and crisp, with blue flower, sour cherry, tobacco smoke, underbrush and candied orange peel.' The magnum of the 2018 Valferana represents both a collector's document and a practical investment in a wine of proven quality. Roberto Conterno's first single-vineyard expressions from Gattinara immediately attracted international attention given his credentials with Monfortino in Barolo, and the 2018 vintage's specific performance in Alto Piemonte validated his decision to produce these wines in what many considered a challenging year for Piedmont overall. Cellar for a minimum of ten to twelve years in magnum. Best from 2032 to 2058. Pair with braised beef, roasted lamb with herbs or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Decant five hours before service; a wine that demands patience. Bright ruby with garnet reflections. The nose is explosive with red fruit, cinnamon, rose petal, blood orange, mint and white pepper, framed by volcanic mineral precision. The palate is complex, deep and tannic, with outstanding structure and driving acidity. The magnum format conveys a rounder, more composed sense of the wine's architecture. Extraordinary potential. |
