G.D. Vajra's Barolo Bricco delle Viole is consistently described by critics as one of the domaine's most exceptional cuvees and among the finest expressions from this specific MGA. The seven-hectare vineyard at 400 to 480 metres elevation, cultivated on Sant'Agata marl soils with marine fossils, produces wines of extraordinary fragrance and vertical precision that regularly stand apart even in G.D. Vajra's outstanding portfolio. The 2022 vintage saw 20 to 30 percent crop loss at this site, but the surviving fruit was of exceptional quality. James Suckling awarded 96 points, describing 'a very absorbing nose showing flowers, passion fruit, sandalwood and crunchy red berries, medium to full-bodied with a detailed, precise tannin structure and tender fruit, finishing firm and focused.' Decanter awarded 93 points, and Vinous 92. The wine employs 40 to 50 days of maceration and maturation in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, a resolutely traditional approach that safeguards what James Suckling's reviewer described as 'crystalline purity' characteristic of the Bricco delle Viole site. Bricco delle Viole has established a reputation as one of Barolo's great high-altitude sites, producing wines whose aromatics consistently exceed expectations for the classification level. The combination of elevation, marl soils and old-vine material produces a Barolo that multiple critics have ranked among the highlights of the vintage across the entire DOCG, not merely within G.D. Vajra's range. This is one of the most sought-after wines in the Vajra allocation and one of modern Barolo's most instructive single-vineyard expressions. Cellar for seven to ten years. Best from 2030 to 2050. Pair with truffle risotto, Piedmontese beef or aged Castelmagno. Decant three to four hours before service; a wine that will reward a decade of patience. Jewelled ruby with a crystalline clarity. A masterclass in ethereal aromatics: cherry cordial, framboise, preserved roses, fresh lavender, dried flowers and a mineral-stone quality from the marl soils. The palate is pure and long with outstanding balance; the tannin structure is firm and detailed but never harsh. Stunning potential requiring significant cellaring. |
