G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo's most admired family estates, farming over 60 hectares in Castiglione Falletto and Verduno with a philosophy that combines traditional Nebbiolo viticulture with thoughtful, progressive cellar management. The Ravera MGA (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva) is among the most celebrated single-vineyard sites in the DOCG, located in the township of Novello and widely regarded by critics and collectors as a candidate for the highest quality tier within Barolo. Vajra has farmed its Ravera parcel biodynamically since 2019. James Suckling awarded 95 points to the 2022 Ravera, describing 'tea, hibiscus, orange rind, sandalwood and dried flowers, really aromatic and absorbing, medium-bodied with a transparent, ethereal sense of fruit and a backbone of tannins that gives definition all the way to the end. Unique balance, from the famed vineyard in Novello.' Vinous assessed 92 points, finding the wine 'powerful and tannic with dried cherry, chalk, mint, white pepper and dried herbs infusing tons of mineral and savory energy, svelte and linear but also nicely balanced for the vintage.' The 2022 Barolo vintage was warm and dry, reducing yields but concentrating quality. Ravera's reputation within the Barolo DOCG has grown significantly over the past decade, with collectors and critics consistently ranking the finest Ravera expressions alongside the historic crus of Serralunga d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto. For Vajra, whose hallmark is precision and aromatic definition over sheer power, Ravera's combination of San't Agata marl soils and high altitude delivers a Barolo of ethereal elegance that is immediately recognisable as one of the domaine's most expressive sites. Cellar for seven to ten years. Best from 2030 to 2050. Pair with roasted Piedmontese beef, truffle preparations or aged Castelmagno cheese. Decant three hours before service. Luminous ruby-garnet with a translucent clarity. The nose is aromatic and absorbing: tea, hibiscus, orange rind, sandalwood, dried flowers and a mineral backbone. The palate is medium-bodied with a transparent, ethereal fruit core and a backbone of firm tannins giving definition from start to finish. Unique balance for the vintage; requires patience. |
