Barbacarlo is one of Italy's most cult and uncompromising wineries, located in Broni, in the hills of Oltrepò Pavese in Lombardy. The estate became internationally renowned under the late Lino Maga (Commendatore Lino Maga), who dedicated more than half a century to preserving the traditions of his family's historic Barbacarlo vineyard. Since the 1980s, Maga became a symbol of artisan Italian wine, refusing to conform to modern winemaking trends and even relinquishing the DOC designation in favour of Provincia di Pavia IGT to maintain complete freedom over his production methods.

The historic Barbacarlo vineyard comprises approximately 3.5 hectares of steep, south-facing slopes planted predominantly to old vines of Croatina, complemented by Uva Rara and Ughetta di Canneto (Vespolina). Farming is entirely manual, yields are extremely low, fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts and ageing takes place in large old oak casks. Each vintage is bottled only if it meets Maga's exacting standards, making Barbacarlo one of Italy's most distinctive and age-worthy traditional reds.

The 2014 Barbacarlo is a field blend dominated by Croatina, with smaller proportions of Uva Rara and Ughetta di Canneto (Vespolina). Despite the challenging, cooler 2014 growing season, the wine displays remarkable precision and freshness while remaining true to the estate's rustic character.

Deep ruby with garnet highlights, the bouquet reveals aromas of sour cherry, wild blackberry, dried rose petals and forest berries, intertwined with notes of leather, exotic spice, earth, blood orange, dried herbs and gravelly minerality. The palate is dry, savoury and structured, driven by vibrant acidity and firm, grippy tannins. Layers of tart red fruit, smoky spice, leather and mineral nuances unfold towards a long, energetic finish. Compared with warmer vintages, the 2014 is leaner and more linear, emphasising freshness, terroir and longevity over richness.
