Pietracupa is one of the most revered estates in Irpinia, Campania, and is widely regarded as one of the region's benchmark producers. Founded by Sabino Loffredo in the early 1990s, the winery is based in Montefredane, where high-altitude vineyards, volcanic soils and cool mountain influences produce wines of remarkable elegance and longevity. Loffredo is recognised for his minimalist philosophy, allowing each vineyard to express its unique identity through careful farming, spontaneous fermentations and restrained use of oak. While Pietracupa is celebrated for its Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, its Taurasi has become one of the purest expressions of Aglianico, combining the variety's natural power with exceptional finesse. The grapes are sourced from old vineyards around the Taurasi denomination, planted on clay, limestone and volcanic soils before ageing in large oak casks to preserve varietal purity. Made from 100% Aglianico, the 2016 Taurasi is fermented with indigenous yeasts before ageing in large wooden casks, followed by further bottle maturation prior to release. The outstanding 2016 vintage produced a wine of remarkable precision and balance. Deep ruby in colour, it opens with aromas of black cherry, plum, violet, dried rose, liquorice, tobacco, leather and volcanic earth, layered with hints of graphite and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is full-bodied yet beautifully proportioned, with firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity and exceptional mineral tension. Concentrated dark fruit, savoury spice and smoky notes lead to a long, structured finish. Although approachable with decanting, it is built for long-term cellaring. " Aromas of ripe dark berries, spices and herbs. Medium- to full-bodied with firm, polished tannins and fresh acidity. Compact and savoury with a long finish. Better from 2025. " -- James Suckling |
