Tormaresca is the Puglia estate of the renowned Antinori family, one of Italy's oldest and most respected wine dynasties with over 600 years of winemaking history. Established in the late 1990s, Tormaresca was created to unlock the potential of Southern Italy's indigenous grape varieties while applying Antinori's expertise in vineyard management and precision winemaking. Bocca di Lupo is located in the Castel del Monte DOC in northern Puglia, within the Murgia plateau. The estate sits at approximately 250 metres above sea level on limestone-rich, rocky soils that are particularly well suited to Aglianico, one of Southern Italy's noblest grape varieties. Cooler nights at this elevation preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, allowing Aglianico to achieve full phenolic ripeness while retaining elegance. Bocca di Lupo is widely regarded as Tormaresca's flagship wine and one of the finest expressions of Aglianico produced outside Basilicata. The 2016 vintage is made from 100% Aglianico sourced exclusively from the Bocca di Lupo estate vineyards. Following fermentation, the wine is matured for around 15 months in French oak barriques, followed by further bottle ageing before release. The outstanding 2016 vintage produced a wine of concentration and finesse. It displays aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, balsamic herbs, cocoa, sweet spice and tobacco, complemented by notes of graphite and iron-rich minerality. The palate is full-bodied and enveloping, with polished tannins, vibrant acidity and remarkable freshness. Layers of dark fruit, liquorice, dark chocolate and Mediterranean herbs lead to a persistent, savoury finish that promises excellent ageing potential. " Very rich, juicy and plummy on the nose, vibrant, poised and quite oaky. The attack is assertive and tannic, with richness and density, yet fresh acidity keeps it polished, stylish and energetic through the long finish. " -- Decanter " Initial tones of coconut, anise and cola carry the nose, with dense blackberry and black cherry aromas. Full and rich on the palate, with seductive warm spice, gripping dark fruit, polished tannins and well-integrated acidity. Drink 2023–2030." -- Wine Enthusiast " Sexy aromas of strawberry, rose petal and spices offer excellent depth and freshness. The palate is refined and energetic, with fine tannins, bright acidity and excellent ageing potential." -- Vinous " A harmonious, medium-bodied red, with blackberry coulis, crushed boysenberry, coffee liqueur, wild sage and iron-laced minerality. Fine tannins support a polished finish. " -- Wine Spectator |
