Tasting Notes :

Petrolo is one of Tuscany's most acclaimed boutique estates, located in the Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC in southeastern Tuscany. Owned by the Bazzocchi family since the 1940s and led by Luca Sanjust, the estate has earned international recognition for its organic viticulture, low-intervention philosophy and pursuit of terroir-driven wines. While Petrolo is best known for the Merlot-based Galatrona, the estate has also become a pioneer in redefining Sangiovese through innovative winemaking.

Bòggina A was first produced in 2011 as an experimental project to explore how 100% Sangiovese could express itself when fermented and matured entirely in terracotta amphorae. The fruit comes from the historic Bòggina vineyard, originally planted in 1947 and replanted through massal selection to preserve the vineyard's original genetic diversity. The amphora ageing highlights the purity of Sangiovese fruit while enhancing texture and preserving freshness, resulting in one of Tuscany's most distinctive contemporary Sangiovese wines.

Made from 100% organic Sangiovese, the 2018 Bòggina A undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts before ageing for approximately 15 months in terracotta amphorae, without the influence of oak. This approach emphasises fruit purity, floral aromatics and mineral precision.

The 2018 vintage is elegant and beautifully balanced. The bouquet reveals aromas of ripe cherry, plum, wild berries, violets, dried herbs, orange peel and wet earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with refined tannins, vibrant acidity and exceptional precision. Layers of red fruit, savoury spice, terracotta, tobacco and mineral notes culminate in a long, energetic finish. The absence of oak allows the vineyard character and purity of Sangiovese to shine through.

" The purity of fruit here is impressive with cherries, plums and highlights of grilled meat and wet earth. Some tile, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that are pure and polished. Lots of fruit at the end, but not overdone. From organically grown grapes. Fermented and aged in amphora. Drink or hold. " -- James Suckling

" The wine displays remarkable freshness and transparency, with the amphora ageing enhancing aromatic purity and texture. Bright cherry fruit, floral notes, earthy complexity and finely integrated tannins create a polished, terroir-driven expression of Sangiovese with excellent ageing potential. " -- Wine Advocate

" Galloni praised the wine's vibrant energy, perfumed red fruit, floral lift and mineral tension, noting its elegant structure and long, persistent finish. " -- Vinous, Antonio Galloni
