Barbacàn is one of the most celebrated artisanal producers in Valtellina, Lombardy, and has played a leading role in showcasing the elegance of mountain-grown Nebbiolo (locally known as Chiavennasca). Founded by the Triacca family in the village of San Giacomo di Teglio, the estate farms some of the region's steepest terraced vineyards using traditional hand cultivation—a practice known as heroic viticulture due to the extreme slopes and absence of mechanisation.

The estate comprises just a few hectares of organically farmed vineyards planted on ancient dry-stone terraces overlooking the Adda Valley. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are made with minimal intervention to preserve the purity of fruit and the distinctive alpine character of Valtellina. The Sol bottling originates from the Valgella subzone, one of the highest and coolest areas of the appellation, where decomposed granite soils and significant diurnal temperature variation produce particularly refined and aromatic expressions of Nebbiolo.

The 2019 Sol is produced from 100% Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca) sourced from old vines in Valgella. The grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation before ageing in large neutral oak casks, allowing the vineyard's character to take precedence over oak influence.

The 2019 vintage is beautifully poised, combining the finesse typical of Valgella with impressive concentration. Aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry, rose petals and alpine herbs are layered with hints of orange peel, crushed stone and subtle spice. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, with silky tannins, bright acidity and pronounced mineral tension. The finish is long, savoury and delicately perfumed, making it a classic example of elegant mountain Nebbiolo.
