Tasting Notes

Benjamin Leroux is one of Burgundy's most acclaimed modern winemakers. After studying viticulture from an early age, he became régisseur (estate manager) of Domaine Comte Armand at just 24 years old, where he was instrumental in elevating the estate's reputation. In 2007, he established his own négociant-micro domaine in Beaune, sourcing fruit from meticulously farmed vineyards while also cultivating several parcels himself. Today, Benjamin Leroux is widely regarded as one of Burgundy's elite producers, known for wines that combine precision, transparency and remarkable consistency across every appellation.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin is assembled from several village-level vineyards, with Les Seuvrées forming the core of the blend, complemented by parcels such as La Justice, Champerrier, Les Jeunes Rois and En Champs. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, with many following organic or biodynamic principles. The wine is fermented with approximately 20% whole clusters, using indigenous yeasts, before ageing for around 16 months in French oak barrels, of which only about 20% are new, preserving the purity and character of Gevrey-Chambertin.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin reflects the warmth of the vintage while maintaining freshness and elegance.

Deep ruby in colour, the wine offers expressive aromas of black cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry and crushed rose petals, accompanied by hints of cold tea, violets, forest floor, subtle spice and earthy minerality. The partial whole-cluster fermentation contributes delicate floral and savoury nuances without overwhelming the fruit. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and vibrant acidity, the palate combines ripe red and dark berry fruit with fine mineral tension and impressive energy. The finish is long, precise and beautifully balanced, displaying the hallmark finesse.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a slightly stemmy bouquet (around 20% whole bunch), dark berry fruit laced with cold tea, just a slight beetroot note emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, firm grip, fine depth with a crisp finish. Very fine. " -- Vinous

" Dark but fresh purple, lively fruit and roses; this wine is lovely with more of a heart than usual, more floral, in fact it dances through to the back. The addition of the Brochon vineyards makes this more floral, more juicy and less savoury. " -- Inside Burgundy, Jasper Morris ( MW )
