The Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is the centrepiece of 00 Wines’ Burgundy portfolio, which Chris and Kathryn Hermann built alongside their Oregon project as a direct connection to the classic white Burgundy tradition that inspired the house’s entire winemaking philosophy. Pierre Millemann’s consultancy, rooted in his long experience at estates including DRC, Gaja and Domaine Dujac, gives 00 Wines exceptional access to the network and knowledge required to source fruit from a genuinely prestigious Meursault premier cru site. The wine is made in very small quantities and is the natural Burgundian complement to the house’s Oregon Chardonnays. Les Charmes is one of the largest and most celebrated of Meursault’s premier cru vineyards, situated at the southern end of the village on the lower slopes of the Côte d’Or, adjacent to the equally renowned Genevrières. Charmes-Dessus, the upper portion of the climat, is generally considered the more refined of the two lieux-dits, producing wines of characteristic richness, floral delicacy and honeyed depth that age superbly over a decade or more. The 2022 Burgundy vintage was defined by drought and heat, resulting in wines of unusual concentration, richness and structure for the appellation. Vinous awarded the 2022 00 Wines Meursault Charmes 1er Cru 95 points, with a review describing “vibrant yellow-gold… smoky reduction that blows off to reveal notes of rosemary, stone dust and crushed nectarines… purity defines the nose,” with “cooling acidity and a saline mineral tinge” on the palate. This is an outstanding score for a Meursault premier cru from a new-generation American producer, confirming the quality of both the source material and the winemaking. The wine sits naturally alongside the Oregon portfolio as a demonstration of what 00 Wines pursues as its broader white wine ideal. Vibrant yellow-gold with a nose of smoky reduction, rosemary, stone dust and crushed nectarines. Pure and cooling on the palate with a saline mineral tinge underpinning ripe orchard fruit, a hint of sage and citrus throughout, and a long, lip-smacking finish with saline resonance. Requires one to two years of patience; best from 2025 through 2034.Vibrant yellow-gold with lime green inflections. Smoky reduction wafts up at first then blows off to reveal notes of rosemary, stone dust and crushed nectarines. Purity defines the nose. Cooling acidity and a saline mineral tinge appear up front as ripe fruits mingle with a hint of sage and citrus. Youthful tension wraps the senses through the lip-smacking finish. — Vinous |
