Domaine de la Janasse is one of the Rhône Valley's most highly regarded estates, founded in 1973 by Aimé Sabon and now led by his children, Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Based in Courthézon, the family farms approximately 90 hectares across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and neighbouring appellations. Through meticulous vineyard management, low yields and traditional winemaking, Janasse has earned an international reputation for producing some of the Southern Rhône's finest wines. Cuvée Chaupin is one of the estate's flagship single-varietal wines, first produced in 2001. Unlike the estate's Vieilles Vignes cuvée, Chaupin is made from 100% Grenache, sourced from three exceptional parcels—Chapouin, La Janasse and La Crau—with some vines dating back to 1912. Planted on sandy soils with rolled galets and limestone subsoils, these old vines produce fruit of remarkable concentration while retaining freshness and elegance. The wine is fermented with a proportion of whole clusters and matured for approximately one year in large oak foudres and demi-muids to preserve the purity of Grenache and the expression of terroir. Produced from 100% Grenache, the 2022 Cuvée Chaupin reflects the warmth of the vintage while maintaining exceptional balance and precision. Deep ruby in colour, the bouquet opens with expressive aromas of wild strawberry, black cherry, raspberry and kirsch, intertwined with notes of Provençal herbs, orange zest, crushed violets, liquorice and warm spices. The palate is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and outstanding concentration. Layers of ripe red berries, crushed stone and savoury garrigue unfold across a long, mineral-driven finish. Compared with the more powerful Vieilles Vignes, Chaupin emphasises purity, finesse and aromatic elegance, making it one of the finest modern expressions of Grenache in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. " Rich black cherry and strawberry fruit, with impressive density and palate weight. The balance is good, with fur-coat tannins and admirable freshness. Very close, if not equal, in quality to the Vieilles Vignes, but in a less robust, more elegant style. " -- Decanter " A superb, well-driven and precise 100% Grenache. Lovely nose of sweet cherries, currants, wild herbs and sweet spices. Full-bodied with fine, firm tannins, plenty of energy and excellent persistence." -- James Suckling " The magnificent 2022 Chaupin is at eye level with the equally stunning 2020. Orange rind, forest strawberry, crushed violets, raspberry and liquorice rise from the glass. Focused, elegant and among the finest vintages of this cuvée." -- Vinous, Nicolas Greinacher |
