Domaine A&E Verset is the continuation of the Verset legacy in Cornas, carried forward by the family following Alain Verset’s celebrated career as one of the appellation’s most revered producers. The Signature Verset cuvée is the prestige selection within the domaine’s range, representing the finest parcels and most carefully selected material from the estate’s old-vine Syrah holdings on Cornas’s fractured granite terraces. The designation pays direct homage to the legacy of Alain Verset and is intended to represent the fullest possible expression of the Verset family’s distinctive approach to Cornas: old vines, granite terroir, traditional vinification and minimal intervention in the cellar. Cornas is the smallest and most enclosed of the northern Rhône appellations, a steep granite amphitheatre above the town that produces 100% Syrah of extraordinary depth and longevity. The granite and gneiss soils of Cornas, unlike the schist and limestone that characterise the other great northern Rhône appellations, impart a distinctive smokiness, mineral precision and tannic backbone to the wines that sets them apart from the rounder, more fruit-driven expressions of Saint-Joseph or the more floral, perfumed character of Côte-Rôtie. The 2023 vintage in the northern Rhône delivered wines of excellent freshness and aromatic precision, with the structural concentration to age well over a long period. The Signature Verset represents both a continuation of a legendary family name in Cornas and a statement of intent from a new generation committed to maintaining the quality and philosophy that made Alain Verset’s wines so widely sought by northern Rhône enthusiasts. As a 2023 from what is becoming one of the most closely watched addresses in the appellation, it is a wine that will attract sustained interest from the specialist retailers, importers and collectors who follow Cornas with serious attention, even as the five approved publications have yet to review this specific cuvée consistently. |
