Domaine Ramonet’s Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs Canet is among the most unusual and quietly celebrated wines in the estate’s portfolio: a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru whose character and quality would not be out of place among the appellation’s finest expressions, produced from a parcel in a relatively underrated Puligny Premier Cru that benefits from the proximity and influence of the Grand Cru vineyards of Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Champs Canet is a 4.25-hectare Premier Cru on the southern boundary of Puligny-Montrachet, sharing some of the clay-limestone soil character and the mineral depth of the Grand Crus to which it is adjacent, and whose wines from the finest producers combine the characteristic Puligny mineral precision with a body and weight that approaches Grand Cru territory in the finest vintages. In the magnum format, from one of the finest recent Puligny white wine vintages, this wine provides an outstanding opportunity to observe the development of a Ramonet Puligny Premier Cru over a long and complete ageing arc. The 2019 Burgundy white wine vintage was excellent, producing wines of outstanding concentration, aromatic complexity and structural balance that have consistently rewarded those who have had the patience to allow them to develop over the years since their release. For a Puligny Premier Cru of Champs Canet’s naturally fuller and more mineral character, the 2019’s combination of warmth and natural acidity should produce a wine of exceptional richness and development potential. Ramonet’s approach, with natural fermentation and a minimal use of new oak, ensures that the site’s character is the primary driver of the wine’s complexity rather than the winemaker’s cellar decisions. A Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru in the magnum format from the 2019 vintage provides collectors with a genuinely exceptional combination of provenance, format and vintage quality. Even at the Premier Cru level, a Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet in the magnum format is a wine that will develop beautifully over a fifteen to twenty-year period and whose rarity and provenance make every appearance on the secondary market a significant event. Pale gold with a complex and mineral nose of lemon cream, ripe peach, white flowers, hazelnut, chalk mineral and a fine flint-mineral depth from the Champs Canet clay-limestone Premier Cru soils. Full-bodied with excellent natural acidity, outstanding concentration from the 2019 vintage and a very long, complex, mineral finish of genuine Premier Cru ambition. Best from 2026 through 2042. |
