Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is, alongside the even more celebrated Haut-Brion Blanc produced from the adjacent estate, one of the two greatest dry white wines produced in the Bordeaux appellation, consistently regarded as the most age-worthy and mineral-complex Sémillon-dominant white wine made anywhere in France. The wine is produced from approximately 70% Sémillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc grown in La Mission’s own white wine vineyard, aged in French barriques and released after extended cellaring at the château with the same premium on maturity and readiness that governs the estate’s red wine releases. The 2021 vintage was extraordinary for Bordeaux white wines across Pessac-Léognan: multiple critics, including Jeff Leve at The Wine Cellar Insider, described La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2021 as one of the finest white wines they had tasted in their careers, and the vine balance and mineral precision that the cool, well-structured 2021 vintage produced at this estate was praised by every major publication that reviewed the wine. The 2021 Pessac-Léognan white wine vintage was exceptional, combining the freshness and mineral precision of a cool growing season with the natural maturity of well-farmed Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc harvested at the moment of optimal phenolic and sugar balance. For La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, whose naturally rich, textured Sémillon character is complemented by the Sauvignon Blanc’s aromatic freshness, the 2021’s combination of freshness and mineral depth should produce one of the most precisely balanced and age-worthy expressions of this wine produced in the past decade. Decanter rated the 2021 vintage 4.5 out of 5 stars for Pessac-Léognan whites, confirming the critical consensus around what was consistently described as an ideal vintage for the appellation’s white wine production. La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, at the very top of the Pessac-Léognan white wine hierarchy alongside its neighbour Haut-Brion Blanc, is a wine of extraordinary prestige and genuine rarity that provides the most serious expression of Bordeaux white wine ambition outside of the Haut-Brion Blanc itself. The 2021 vintage’s exceptional conditions for white wine production make this an acquisition of outstanding significance at this quality level. Peach and waxed-lemon character here. Some fennel and aniseed, too. Very fresh. Medium to full body with a round, creamy palate. A little closed for now at the end. 55.2% semillon and 44.8% sauvignon. - James Suckling |
