Tasting Note :

The VGR, or Very Good Red, is 00 Wines’ flagship Willamette Valley Pinot Noir blend, produced using the winery’s signature vinification approach of fermenting whole berries in 500-litre Tuscan terra cotta amphorae before ageing in French oak. This method, developed with French consultant Pierre Millemann, produces a Pinot Noir of exceptional textural finesse and mineral intensity, one that the team at 00 Wines has consistently refined across successive vintages since the label’s first release with the 2015 harvest.

The 2022 VGR is sourced primarily from the Yamhill-Carlton appellation including the Shea and Highland vineyards, complemented by Chehalem Mountains parcels of old ungrafted vines from 1970s plantings. The 2022 Oregon vintage, widely described by producers as a “miracle” following its recovery from spring frost devastation, delivered wines of outstanding concentration, vibrant acidity and genuine structural complexity. Vinous’s Eric Guido described the 2022 VGR as “a beautiful wine of contrasts,” noting its juicy acidity, round textures and lingering spicy finish.

The VGR’s critical reception in 2022 confirms 00 Wines’ position as one of Oregon’s most closely watched Pinot Noir producers. James Suckling awarded 94 points, the Wine Advocate 93 and Vinous 92, with all three publications acknowledging the wine’s distinctive character derived from the amphorae fermentation and old-vine sources. As the entry point into the 00 Wines red wine range, the VGR is also the most accessibly priced and most widely distributed wine in the lineup, making it the first wine most collectors encounter from this exceptional house.

Deep ruby with kirsch, dark cherry, violets, sage and savory meat notes on a pliant, round palate of ripe red berry fruit and juicy acidity. A subtle salty mineral quality adds depth toward the finish, which is long, tactile and spicy. An approachable and engaging Pinot Noir; drink from 2025 through 2034.

Highly expressive, mixing kirsch liqueur with crushed blackberries, violets and sage, taking on a savory whiff of seared meats. Round and pliant, displaying lovely lift as juicy acidity motivates ripe red berry fruits. A subtle tinge of salty concentration adds depth toward the close, tapering off with a spicy flourish and hints of sour cherry pit.  — Vinous
